What year did the Flatiron Building open, and what was it originally called?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

Spring cleaning comes with a green twist in Manhattan this April. On Wednesday, April 15th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Flatiron South Plaza will host a Community Recycling Day devoted to electronics and textile recycling, presented in partnership with the Lower East Side Ecology Center.

Residents are encouraged to bring all types of electronics—working or not—including computers, TVs, monitors, phones, and cables, along with clean textiles like clothing, shoes, and linens. Clean plastic bags are also accepted, thanks to a collaboration with SoMad®.

This event is part of a citywide Earth Month push to reduce landfill waste and encourage sustainable habits.

💡 Answer to Trivia Question:

The Flatiron Building opened in 1902. It was originally called the Fuller Building, named after George A. Fuller, founder of the company that commissioned it. Locals quickly dubbed it the "Flatiron" because its distinctive triangular shape resembled a cast-iron clothes iron of the era.
