The Enduring Legacy of Gramercy Park

Gramercy Park stands as one of New York City’s most exclusive and historic private green spaces, born from the vision of Samuel B. Ruggles in 1831.

Ruggles transformed a marshy plot once called “Grommesshie” into a two-acre private park, surrounded by 66 coveted residential lots with an iron fence erected in 1832 and locked gates since 1844.

Strict original deed restrictions have safeguarded the enclave’s tranquility, prohibiting commercial activity and fending off intrusions such as proposed transit routes in 1890 and 1912.

The district boasts architecturally significant buildings, including the 1883 Gramercy Park East co-op, 1 Lexington Avenue, and the statue of actor Edwin Booth.

Today, park keys remain highly limited—reserved for select residents and institutions like The Players Club and National Arts Club, with public access granted only on Christmas Eve.

Gramercy Park continues to symbolize Manhattan elegance, protected heritage, and enduring allure.
