Nestled on the north and west sides of Union Square Park in Manhattan, the Union Square Greenmarket stands as GrowNYC's flagship farmers' market, buzzing with energy year-round. Since its humble beginnings in 1976 with just a handful of farmers, it has blossomed into a thriving destination hosting up to 140 regional producers during peak seasons, drawing 60,000 shoppers weekly who connect directly with growers.
Open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (with possible early closures in winter), the market offers an unparalleled array of seasonal treasures: heirloom vegetables, heritage meats like bison and ostrich, artisan cheeses, fresh-baked breads, jams, honey, cut flowers, and even farmstead kimchee. Standout vendors include Andrew's Honey from Connecticut, Bread Alone's Ulster County pastries, and Eckerton Hill Farm's heirloom tomatoes from Pennsylvania.
Beyond shopping, it's a community classroom with weekly chef-led cooking demos at the Market Information Tent, interactive education stations for tours and tastings (spring through fall), and a compost program in partnership with LES Ecology Center. Payment is inclusive, accepting cash, SNAP/EBT (with up to $10 daily Health Bucks bonus), debit/credit, WIC/Senior coupons, and more.
This iconic spot fosters sustainability and joy, where students learn about seasonality and visitors savor the electric atmosphere of farm-fresh innovation. Perfect for a stroll, picnic, or discovering NYC's local flavors—head over and taste the difference! |
